Zolfo Springs, Florida

In Central Florida, far from the hustle and bustle of city life, one can find rural, agricultural, Hardee County. The County is primarily made up of citrus and vegetables growers, and cattle ranches. One such working citrus and cattle ranch has expanded to become the Double M Ranch Bed and Breakfast, which is owned by Charles and Mary Jane Matheny.

Visit a working ranch, cattle and citrus operation.

Double M Ranch is a working commercial cattle and citrus operation in Central Florida located within 2 hours of Florida's major attractions and beaches -- including Wait Disney World, Cypress Gardens, Busch Gardens, Sea World, Gatorland, Edison's Home, etc...
Close by are lake fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, and a multitude of golf courses.
Come to the "Country" of Florida!
The Mathenys have a contemporary home made of stone and wood, and which is divided into two parts: the Mathenys live in one side of the house, and the other side is for the enjoyment of their guests. Guests have a separate entrance to the accommodations side which has a large living room with a pool table, two bedrooms and a bath. Only guests traveling together are booked simultaneously so that no guest shares the bath with someone they are unfamiliar with. One guest room bedroom is called the English room - the room is decorated in greens and pinks and has a brass double bed and is furnished with wall decorations portraying Great Britain. The second room is the Malaysian room, decorated in browns, blues and mauves and fumished with a queen bed and malaysian art and decorations. As your hosts travel extensively, most of the decor was purchased in the country bearing its name. An above ground swimming pool is available to cool off in during the hot summer months after a long day of sightseeing.
The location, while rural, is conveniently located to many items of interest. It is located just off the Cracker Trail, the historic cattle drive route in Florida and home to an annual old time trail ride, it is near Paynes Creek and Highlands Hammock State Parks, and near many lakes good for fishing and water skiing. Peace River has canoe outposts for this outdoor activity. Thirteen golf courses are nearby. Within a 2 hour drive or less are Cypress Gardens, Disney World, and the beach. In March, Pioneer Days is a five day festival in Zolfo Springs, famous for its electric and steam engines and massive flea market. Also in March the world renown 24 Hour Grand Prix car race takes place in Sebring, which is just down the road from the Ranch. A ranch tour is an option most guests enjoy tremendously, and gives you a taste of Old Florida. If you are into hiking or bird watching, the 4500 acres on the ranch give you ample space to enjoy the out-of-doors and the road is paved so that bikers can enjoy the peace and quiet of the country. There is a horse riding stable about 30 minutes away with excellent trail riding for all levels.
A new addition to the ranch is a sporting clays course for those wishing to hone their shooting skills in beautiful pristine Florida woods. It is an 8 station course designed for all skill levels of sports shooter.
Charlie operates the ranch full time and is an avid photographer, having taken pictures of many endangered animal species found on the ranch. Mary Jane is an attorney and certified travel consultant. As on-site BNB owners, they can answer your questions, and give you many suggestions as to what to see and do.
No smoking is allowed in the house, and well behaved children over thirteen are welcome. Unfortunately, because your hosts have cats, dogs, and various barnyard animals including a horse, ducks and two raccoons, guests really wouldn't want to bring any pets with them. Coffee and tea making items are provided for guests. Breakfast is a heavy continental one with hand squeezed orange juice from the grove of your hosts. No one has ever complained they were hungry after breakfast!
