How to write your listiing
A well written listing will bring you more guests.

Your listing in a Directory is for the purpose of attracting guests to look at your website. It is important to spend the time needed to include all the features of your inn that a guest might look for.

The name of your Inn and its address are important, of course, because a potential guest might have heard of you somewhere, so your listing should allow a search for your name and your location. For example, if the name of your inn is "The Old Captain's Inn" located in Key West, Florida, a guest should be able to enter the words "Captain" and "Key West" in order to find your inn. A good directory will provide that.

Nearby towns should be named in your listing. If your inn is located in "Town A" but "Town B" is only six miles away and has tourist attractions, add the name of "Town B" to your listing as well so a potential guest will find you even if he only enters "Town B" in his listing search.

Amenities and Attractions should all be listed, even if it is only a list. Your listing is for the purpose of atracting the guest to look at your website. (Yes, a website is becoming very important). In your listing, you don't have to say "we have a beautiful, blue tile Olympic size swimming pool with low and high diving boards surrounded by deck chairs and tables and umbrellas."  Simply saying "swimming pool" is enough information for the listing. Include every conceivable key word that appllies to your inn because you can't know what key words your potential guest might use in his search. Check out the list of possible key words in the box below. It is not a complete list, but I am certain you will understand the value of including all the words that apply. Your website can include descriptions and lots of pictures.

One good picture should run with your listing so a guest will know if you are a rural cottage, a grand old mansion or an urban brownstone. Or, your listing picture could be of some outstanding feature you may offer, like a view of the harbor from your terrace.

We welcome calls from innkeepers who might like some advice on writing your listing or designing your webpage. We do not charge for this service.

Analyze the suggested key words below to understand their importance. If a guest searches for an inn with the words "salmon" and "spa" you don't want to have your inn omitted from the list if those words can apply to you.

For example, as of this date we have 411 inns listed in Maine. But only 29 of them have included the word "lobster" in their listing. So any prospective guest who is looking for an Inn in Maine and includes the word "lobster" in their search will only see those 29 inns come up on their list.
